Provincial Championships 2016 - Weekend #2

2016-09-02

Double Silver for the Valley in Weekend #2

Valley United's U-14 Tier 1 eams highlighted the second weekend of provincial championships as both boys and girls made it to the championship games before bowing out and returning with silver medals. In boys action, after a 3rd place finish in the regular season the team knocked off Suburban 4-1 in the semi-final before falling 2-0 to Dartmouth in the final.
In girl's action VU entered the tournament in 4th place. In an exciting semi-final they used penalty kicks to oust Dunbrack after a scoreless match. The final also ended in a draw (1-1) but a penalty kick during overtime was the difference as Halifax County came out on top.

The senior B men's championships were held in Metro. Neither of the Valley's two entries made it to the championship match.
Bentley Built Homes lost 2-0 to Halifax Young Gunz and 4-0 to FSA Graduates before rebounding to beat Chester in their final game.
Wolfville Merchants defeated Halifax Celtic Metros 3-0 and Truro 2-0 but a loss to the Halifax Pumas prevented them from playing for gold.

The U-18 Tier 2 girls championships were hosted out of New Minas and the Valley was represented by East Kings, Clare and Somerset. Though all the teams won games, none were able to advance to the medal matches.
East Kings lost by 3-1 scores to both Dunbrack and Antigonish before blanking Sackville 1-0 in their final game.
Somerset came out on the short end of 5-2 and 7-0 results to Upper County and Dartmouth before a 3-1 win over Clare in their third match.
Clare sandwiched a 4-3 victory over Upper County between their losses to Dartmouth (6-0) and Somerset.

South Shore was the venue for the U-18 boys Tier 2 championships where the VDSA reps were Kingston-Greenwood and Digby.
Last year's silver medalists from Digby struggled this time around, falling to CC Riders (2-0), East Hants (6-2) and Halifax City (5-3)
Kingston- Greenwood fared a bit better winning their final game 6-4 over Dartmouth after losses to Dunbrack (2-0) and Upper County (3-2)

With no U-14A teams, the only championships with Valley representation in weekend #3 will be the U-16 Tier 2 boys and girls. Bridgetown boys will carry the VDSA banner to their event in Sydney. Girl's action will be in Sackville where Digby will represent the district. Schedules can be found at http://snsprovincials.ca/ Best of luck to both squads.
